Eeeee! Brandon and I are looking for a house! We're a little nervous and scared, but we're also really excited! Our apartment is great, but we're paying a fortune in rent each month. And we've lived here for five years, so we're ready to move on.
Why do houses in Chicagoland have to be so expensive though? Ugh. We want to stay in our neighborhood (Forest Park or Oak Park), but average house prices are climbing. There are houses we can afford (though not too many). Tuesday will be the first official day of house hunting, so we'll see...
I'm looking forward to decorating a new place! ;) |

| Small enough space? Big enough style? |

I like decorating. I like painting and moving furniture and setting up little groups of white ceramic vases and what-not. So.. I took a picture of my dining room several months ago after my husband and I cleaned up and put down a new orange rug I had picked up (on sale!).
I posted it to flickr where it languished until I couldn't sleep one night and I started playing around on flickr. I posted it to the domino flickr group, and then... magic! It was blogged about by sfbaygirl and decor8, and I was pretty jazzed!
Today, I went to check my email and I was contacted by a producer for HGTV! She wanted to know if I was interested in being on "Small Spaces, Big Style". Um, yes! I am! The problem is that our apartment may be too big for a "small space". It's supposed to be under 1000 square feet. Our apartment is 1067 square feet, but 75' of that is storage space, so I don't know if that counts or not.
It's still pretty exciting though! |

The show in Raleigh was great! Even better though, I met so many people that I've 'known' online. Fun! Plus I picked up a pretty fantastic hat, so it was a great trip all around!

 People often ask about inspiration.
Sometimes a new design is based on an object that I love, or something as simple as wanting to work with certain colors. Recently though, a very good idea came from my very good friend Genie Williamson. I present to you: Merci Marceau!

Well, OK. I can't do everything, but I did make a bracelet that I'm pretty proud of!
I made a little sketch first, and then walked over to the bead shop and bought lots of little lengths of chain. The pink bead came from an old necklace that I took apart. It was a little difficult at first (I've never really made jewelry before), but it got easier after the initial mistakes had been made. I'm very pleased. It even looks like I envisioned it would!
So... Nicole Balch, jewelry designer? Um, no. Probably not. But Nicole Balch, proud owner of self-made bracelet? Indeed. |
